Welcome to Tokyo

Day 1: Saturday, October 24, 2026

Welcome to Japan, the Land of the Rising Sun! Upon arrival at either of Tokyo’s airports (Haneda or Narita), pass through immigration, collect your luggage, and clear customs. Toyko - Tea Ceremony & Hama Rikyu

Day 2: Sunday, October 25, 2026

Our day starts with a breakfast spread at the hotel to fuel us for today's adventures. At 10 am, we'll gather for a tea ceremony in the beautiful gardens of HAPPO-EN. We'll be guided through the proper etiquette for a traditional tea ceremony, an important part of Japanese culture. Hint: It's not about the tea!

Afterwards, we'll head over to the Sengakuji Temple, home to the graveyard of 47 Ronin, also known as the "masterless samurai from Ako". We'll visit the museum showcasing artifacts related to the 47 samurai, including letters and armor, and learn about the temple's history of the loyal retainers.

Next, we'll savor lunch at Kitaohji, a warm and inviting restaurant where an expert chef will prepare our meal with fresh, seasonal ingredients. We'll have our own private room to enjoy the multi-course meal.

In the afternoon, we'll stroll around the Hama Rikyu, an expansive garden chock full of beautiful maple, ginkgo, and other trees that will be in full fall color. Originally built as a feudal lord's Tokyo residence and duck-hunting grounds during the Edo Period (1603-1867), the property and all its old buildings are now open to the public for exploration.

Our next stop is Ginza, Tokyo's premier shopping district. Take some time to explore the numerous department stores, boutiques, art galleries, and cafés at your leisure.

Finally, we'll return to the hotel for some downtime before our dinner reservation at Mantetsu, a teppanyaki Japanese restaurant with spectacular views from the 46th floor of the Caretta Shiodome.

FAQs

You will want to fly into Tokyo's Narita Airport (NRT) or Haneda Airport (HND). Haneda is closer to the city center and, therefore, a more affordable and faster taxi or train ride into town.

If you are traveling across an ocean to get to Tokyo, you may want to consider arriving a day early so you have time to relax and get acclimated to the local time zone. We can handle booking your accommodation in the 'Add-on' section.

If you aren't interested in any pre-trip accommodation and want to dive straight into the core trip, please arrive before 4 pm on October 24th.

We'll have a Zoom call about 8 weeks before the trip starts to discuss important logistics and give you packing guidance. In the meantime, here is a great website that we love that will help you with packing and travel trips.

The weather will be cool and pleasant, with daytime highs typically ranging from 55–68°F (13–20°C) and cooler evenings around 45–52°F (7–11°C). It’s the perfect climate for sightseeing, with crisp air and vibrant autumn colors all around.

Presently, if you are a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you do not need a visa to enter Japan for trips of up to 90 days.

We require that everyone traveling with Girls' Guide be able to comfortably walk 3–5 miles per day unassisted, and without difficulty, can navigate stairs, uneven streets or paths, and occasional steep terrain. Most of our trips require this level of physical mobility and fitness, especially when visiting historic towns and landmarks where vehicle access is limited and walking often offers the best experience.

Additionally, some of the 4 and 5-star boutique or historic hotels we stay in do not have elevators and may require climbing stairs to get to your room or access other facilities in the hotel.

Yes, we can accommodate most dietary needs, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and common food sensitivities. However, it's important to note that soy sauce is a foundational ingredient in many Japanese dishes, sauces, and marinades, making it challenging to fully avoid soy. If you have a severe soy allergy, please be aware that options may be limited and cross-contact can be difficult to eliminate.
